What is Lutein?
Lutein and zeaxanthin are orange-yellow carotenoids of plant origin that are concentrated in the yellow spot of the retina in humans and protect the visual cells from short-wave light and free radicals.
Scientific studies indicate that an adequate supply of pigments may reduce the risk of developing age-related macular degeneration and cataracts and influence their progression.
The carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin are found in the retina of the eye and in particularly high concentrations in the yellow spot (macula lutea), i.e. the structure in the middle of the retina with the greatest density of photoreceptors, which achieves the highest visual acuity.
They are selectively enriched there and their concentration is significantly higher than in other tissues. They were also found in the lens.
How important is lutein?
In addition to lutein's effect on vision, it can also have a regenerating effect on the eyes. Research suggests that lutein may slow the progression of age-related macular degeneration.
Why does the body need zeaxanthin?
Along with lutein, zeaxanthin is accumulated in the yellow spot, Latin: macula, of the eye retina. They form the macular pigment, which protects against harmful wavelengths of light and free radicals. Lutein and zeaxanthin filter blue light and therefore appear yellow.
